Prometheus And Christ
I have heard many Greek myths as bedtime stories and in my elementary school classes, but they were just always fun little stories to me until I took a world history class in seventh grade. After hearing these stories in more depth and learning about the cultures that started them, I wondered what significance they had on my life and religion. I found that many characters in Greek literature are often paralleled in Christianity. One of the most noticeable, yet under-acknowledged characters is Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to man and who also gave man hope. Prometheus has many similarities to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is my belief that Prometheus, like many of the other gods, has characteristics which were used in the origination of God and Christ. In order to relate Prometheus to Christ, one must first understand the relationship between Christ and God. Christians believe in the Holy Trinity, which is one God divided into three equal parts: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This was first stated as a truth in the Nicene Creed which declares the fact that Christians believe in (1-6, 18-19): …one God, the Father almighty, maker of Heaven and Earth, of all t
and unseen... in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten Lord, the giver of Life, who proceeds from the father and the son... Who doth not inly groan with every pang of thine save Zeus alone? But he is Both Prometheus and Christ foresaw their demises. Jesus tells his disciples of a traitor who will give him up to the priests to be crucified (Mark 10:32-34), and Prometheus tells the Oceanids of a harsher punishment that Zeus will give him (Aeschylus 191-204). They also tell of a “resurrection” out of the ground. In the case of Jesus Christ, His followers are comforted by him saying, “After I have risen [from the dead] I will go with you to Galilee. Prometheus comforts himself by saying that Zeus will eventually forgive him and everything between them will be peaceful (Aeschylus 214-19). These two figures are correct in their prophecies of the future. Prometheus and Christ are both hailed in different cultures as the savior of mankind. Prometheus tricked Zeus and stole fire from him which he gave to the humans. Zeus was angered at this and had Hephaestus mold a woman to give to Prometheus’ brother, Epimetheus. Prometheus, being an all-knowing god, warned his brother not to accept any gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepted the woman, whose name was Pandora, anyway. All the gods had given Pandora gifts harming mankind in a box. Pandora opened the box and hatred and all the evils were brought to man; the only thing remaining was hope. Prometheus is made to suffer for all the gifts that he bestowed on mankind by being crucified in the ground having a bird eat his liver each day (Morford and Lenardon 59-60). This parallels to the Christian story of Adam and Eve. God first created Adam and then Eve as his mate. He warned them not to eat from one tree, but Eve convinced Adam to eat the fruit and in return God p!
