Wild Geese By Martha Ostenso

Relevance Of Wild Geese By Martha Ostenso In Today's Society Although the novel Wild Geese was an award winning piece of literature when it was written, much of the novel's original "power" has been lost over time. The hold that Caleb has over his family is strong, and the fear the family members have of him is realistic. But, the things he threatens to shame his family with no longer carry the consequence of causing the humiliation and disgrace as may have been the case in the past. The romance between Mark Jordan and Lind was an entirely new and fairly scandalous style of writing at the time, and Ostenso was one of the first authors to introduce the realist style of writing to the literary community in North America. But, by today's standards the "perfect" romance is dictated by the soap operas and prime time television shows, and the relationship Mark and Lind had is neither scandalous or seemingly romantic. The use of Judith as a sex symbol cannot be as meaningful today as it was in the past. The comparisons of her and the horses, t!

he descriptive passages of her rolling around in the dirt no longer create an image of a frustrated young girl, full of powerful sexual energy.

mind, I saw a sickly, badly dressed, pompous man. Romance in today's books is usually describing beautiful women who have had some misfortune and a rich Fabio look-alike comes to sweep them off their feet (or at least that's the impression I get from the covers of these books). These books are the best sellers of romance and I can't really see Wild Geese up on the shelf beside any of them today.

Portraying Judith as a sex symbol is ineffective. Her sexuality is depicted when she is compared to an untamed horse, wrestling, or rolling around in the dirt. These comparisons leave me wondering if she is actually a bit on the masculine side. The book often describes her as physically strong and exuding this boiling energy. Over the last seventy-five years, the woman as a sex symbol has drastically changed. Perhaps in 1925, Judith was a woman that readers would admire for her emotional and physical strength. Those qualities are still admired characteristics of females in power today, but in a different way. Women today show strength and spirit through knowledge and skill. Admirable talents may include things such as painting, reading or writing; Judith is strong because she deals with farm life and the chores that are included in this lifestyle. How can I possibly relate to her in this way? Not only, because I did not grow up on a farm, I had many friends who did, and they d!

t resources like Social Services were not available then, but the point I'm making is that it's difficult to relate to the trials that these children endured. Parents today are more likely to encourage their children to leave home at the appropriate age than wanting them to stay and continue living at home. It has been researched and found that the happiest times in a couple's life is right after a child is born and then again when that child leaves home. Knowing this, how can I possible begin to understand why Caleb wants to keep his children from leaving?
