Review Of “Orleans Battle“ By Remini

Robert V. Remini is one of the nations best historical authorities on Andrew Jackson, and a former professor of history at the University of Illinois, Chicago. With a host of excellent Andrew Jackson books under his belt, The Battle of New Orleans is no exception. The battle of New Orleans is well documented, including the reasons for it. Remini characterizes this battle as “one of the great turning points in American history,”(1) and he goes great lengths in proving this point.

The Battle of New Orleans was truly one of, if not the most important victory for this nation(2). In the war of 1812 the British launched a three-prong assault on the United States. With invading British forces succeeding in breaching the Canadian border as well as setting fire to Washington DC all that was needed was the routing of the south. This set the stage for Andrew Jackson’s brilliant campaign and Remini’s excellent reverberation of the events.

One of the most important factors in the American defeat of invading British forces is Jackson’s excellent preparedness and actions leading up to the battle it’s self. Moving troops at record speed, blazing his way thr

. The British and United States signed the treaty of Ghent ending the war of 1812 before the battle took place. If not for the time delay of communication between the Americas and Europe no blood would have been spilled. Remini goes to great lengths in showing Andrew Jackson’s take charge patriotism(4) as well as his disgust for the British,(5) on and off the field. Some say Jackson would have still attacked even with word of the treaty just out of spite for Britain.(6)

Remini highlighted the first surprise attack as the one of Jackson’s smartest moves. The Americans probably saved New Orleans in that swift nighttime attack, in that the British hesitated with their assault. This hesitation allowed United States forces to build a fortification that proved to be impenetrable in future advances of Pakenham and his troops. Remini doesn’t forget to explain the smaller battles around the main battlefield like the breach of American lines on the west bank or the defense of Fort St. Philip at Plaqumine.

One thing that Remini decided to leave out is a quarrel he had with a local Judge Dominik Hall. Jackson was fined 1,000 dollars for contempt of court.(
