Road Blocks To The American Dream

Classism: the Road Block to the American Dream.
In the heart of the Compton there lived a boy named Rafael. He is a good boy living in a bad neighborhood while surrounded by violence and drugs. His went to a school that doesn't have enough money to fund itself. The playgrounds weren't safe; there were no clean drinking fountains, nor any open fields to run. Christmas comes along and his family had to tell him that there would be no Christmas that year since Santa couldn't make it (when in actuality it was because his father was fired and didn't have enough money). By the time summer came along Rafael had to get a job washing windows to help out his family survive. Simultaneously in a place called Beverly Hills not too far away lived a boy named William. Williams's parents were very wealthy and they sent him to the best school LA had to offer. It was a very expensive private school that offered playgrounds, after school activities, and even an outstanding curriculum (something Rafael's school lacked). When school William was able to go to a 6-week tour vacation of Europe with the rest of his Orchestra group. These are two children in the same city and about the same age, but it seems like they are worlds apart. Rafael and many other kids like him have dreams of becoming better off then their parents and achieving the American Dream. "America is the land of opportunity and freedom." Many people from other countries come to America because of the opportunities that are said to be possible. Many people illegally come across borders to be in this "Land of the Free," but how free is it? Is Rafael free to go to the major Private schools in his town, or is he able to even become accepted to a recognized University? The road to the American Dream might be possible but there are too many roadblocks and walls that stop the achievement of those goals. Class hand in hand with racism help in causing the disruption of attaining the Dream.
