Role Of Torah In Paul's Letters And Matthew

Paul’s opinion regarding the Torah was that a person does not get to heaven by obeying laws. Many early Christians were concerned about whether the men had to be circumcised or not. Paul said that circumcision was not necessary to be a follower of Jesus, because it is more important for a person to accept Jesus Christ into his or her heart. This is proved in Galatians 2:16 where Paul said, “Yet we know that people don’t receive God’s approval because of their own efforts to live according to a set of standards, but only by believing in Jesus Christ.”

As you can see, the role of the Torah in Matthew differs greatly from its role in Paul’s letters. However, both sides do agree on one thing: salvation is a necessity. Whether we believe that the Torah must be strictly followed or not, we must love God and accept Jesus as our savior.

Paul also mentioned that Christ’s death would have been pointless if we could receive salvation by only obeying rules. According to Paul, Christ’s death freed us from the laws such as circumcision, just as a wife is freed from marriage if her husband dies.

Although the Torah is important in the gospel of Matthew, it is not the only thing of importance. Like in Paul’s letter’s, believing and faith is essential in Matthew. The Torah is meant to be fulfilled through faith and loving God. Matthew 23:37-40 states, “Jesus answered him (a Pharisee), ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself,’ All of Moses’
