Current explanations of schizophrenia give emphasis to a combination of environmental stress, inherited susceptibility, and bio-chemical abnormalities. In schizophrenia, there is a split between thought and emotions, which may become faint, or very inappropriate. An individual diagnosed with schizophrenia would lose interest in external activities, discontinue contact with others, experience a breakdown of personal habits, incapable of dealing with daily events and experience delusions, hallucinations, and thought abnormalities found in other types of psychosis. A person diagnosed with schizophrenia is unable to form one item of information at a time. Their thoughts and actions are being controlled. Disorganized schizophrenia typically develops in early adolescence or young adulthood. It is often preceded by serious personality disorganization in earlier years. Chances of improvement are limited and social impairment is usually extreme.

The psychotic disorder which is a severe disorder characterized by a hallucinations and delusions, and by social withdrawal. This can lead to hospitalization because the individual can no longer tell what is fantasy or hallucination and what is real. Neurosis is an outdated term once used to refer to anxiety disorders, somatoform disorders, dissociative disorders, and some forms of expression.
