School Prayer
Should school prayer be allowed in public schools? Since this country’s establishment, there have been several debates over the issue of religious prayer in school. Religious sects and other groups feel that prayer should be mandatory in public schools; however, many people believe it to be our right to have church and state remain separate. If we allow prayer in school, then it will indoctrinate our unsuspecting children’s minds and devastate the United States Constitution. Religious prayer must not be allowed into public schools. The destruction of our constitution through prayer in schools raises a group of children with no independence of their own thoughts and beliefs. The research that is presented in this paper will prove indefinitely why the use of prayer in public schools is illegal. Public schools are for all children, whether Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Baptist, Quaker, or Atheist. Schools are supported by all taxpayers and should be free of school prayer and religious observances. It is the duty of the parents and churches to instill religious beliefs. It should not be the governments’ job to help instill these religious beliefs. School prayer is a time where all child
There is no such source and cause of strife, quarrels, fights, malignant opposition, persecution and war, and all evil in the state, as religion. Let it once enter our civil affairs, our government would soon be destroyed. Let it once enter our common school, they would be destroyed (F.F.R.F6). When Ingresoll says that, “government and religion… must not try to share the same house”, he understands that government should not put prayer time in school. It can only cause problems and can give no benefit to the student body. The school should not, as he stated, help out the churches by having prayer in school. The religious sect one follows is a choice and by making young children be forced into a religion is not fair. Some students feel very offended when they have to sit through the prayers and teachings of other religions or other religious sects. If the government thinks that the placing of religion in schools would act as a pacifier for the children into a religious and obedient society, they are very mistaken. If prayer is the answer then why aren’t our jails bursting with born agains? In the country of Japan, where no one prays at school, has the lowest crime rate of any developed nation! It is irrational to charge the complicated sociological problems facing our ever-changing population stem from a lack of prayer at school (F.F.R.F. 4). The Supreme Court of Texas said in the result of the Walsh versus the Board of Education that religious prayer in the classroom would only result in the ruining of schools. By requiring Walsh to be subjected to prayer and putting him through the experience at all was enough to violate the Constitution. Any type of prayer led by a coach is no longer allowed and is banned. The 6-3 ruling bars coaches from leading prayers at football games (Civil liberties 151).
