School Uniforms

“A child was brutally beaten today when he fought back against another student who tried to steal his brand new sneakers.” This is a headline that is becoming all too familiar to us. In the past few years, city schools have had a number of serious problems concerning students being ridiculed or being attacked simply because of their attire. School used to be a safe place for children to learn during the day. Students should not be afraid to attend school, but often that is the case. They have to live with the fear of being hurt or ridiculed by the other students that deem them to be different. Many times in our society the class structure is often exposed through material items. Children are often shielded from this, but it becomes evident in the clothes they wear to school. Whether it is a rich kid who finds himself in danger for having more, or a poor kid who is ridiculed for not having enough, this is a problem that needs to be solved. School officials in many city schools have begun to regulate this problem by making it mandatory that the students wear uniforms. This is a valid solution to a problem that many times prevents children from receiving a proper education. Uniforms should b

When children wear street clothes to school, what they are wearing and how they are wearing it reflects their overall attitude. The quality of a person’s clothing makes others perceive them differently. It also reflects the way they may perceive themselves as well. For example, if a child does not come from a rich family, he or she is apt to wear clothes that are not the high-price name brands. If a child is embarrassed about what they are wearing, then they will have low self-esteem. Another example would reflect the opposite end of the spectrum. If a child has a wealthier family than most, it is likely that this child will wear more expensive clothing. He/she might look down on the less fortunate and believe they are superior to other less-fortunate people. Uniforms help create equality in this aspect. No child should have to go to school and deal with the stress that accompanies the feeling of inadequacy that is due to feeling different because of the clothes they !

Just because a certain person or group does not like one or any of those things does not give them the right to dictate what someone should wear. If they were taught properly, children would know to send the correct message to their peers by their appearance and behavior.

Those who oppose mandatory school uniforms argue that the home was designed to teach children right from wrong, to respect and obey authority, and how to socially function properly with others. They feel that teachers have a responsibility to teach and students have the responsibility to learn. Both have the right to express their individuality, but it is being argued that wearing uniforms does not allow the children to do that. Many feel that children have the right to express themselves, non-violently, whether it’s wearing various rock band tee shirts or different brands of jeans does it.
