Side Effects Of Abortion

Abortion is the expulsion of a fetus prior to a natural birth. Many people have different views of this controversial topic. However, whether a person is for it, against it, or somewhere in between, all can agree on the result, the loss of a life. To the contrary of what some may think, abortion does not only destroy the soon to be child, it also may cause side effects in the mother. Abortion procedures may affect the mother in several different ways: medical complications, emotional difficulties, and/or societal problems.

First, if a woman decides to have an abortion, she should consider the possibilities of medical complications. Pregnancy always means physical change; women must wait for the right time to have the procedure, while she waits for that given time, the reality of her pregnancy becomes manifest in her body. She may experience Nausea, Fatigue, enlarged breast, weight gain, and skin changes. (The Healing Choice)

A woman may develop breast cancer from an abortion. Estrogen is a known attribute to breast cancer, and estrogen levels in a woman are twenty times greater during the pregnancy. This causes breast tissue to enlarge; this is converted to milk after the pregnancy is completed. However, if the pregnancy is st

opped due to an abortion the milk will not form and the estrogen may cause cancerous breast tissue to form (Frank Shen-83).

Each woman has different emotions and physical reactions to pregnancy, and the same women may react differently to different pregnancies (Robert Crooks). The most common emotional reaction immediately after an abortion, even as women awake from sedation, is “relief” (The healing choice). When sedated feeling of strong emotions subside. Sadness and depression are also predictable responses to the pain of an unwanted pregnancy.

Typical feelings after an abortion include, separation, isolation, and solitude. Solitude is a private emotional space wherein women process their inner thoughts and feelings. Isolation, is a place of emptiness and anguish in which woman cannot synthesis her infant life. Separation is a natural state when a women is feeling different from others during pregnancy, abortion, and post abortion (the healing choice).

Contrast too, Author to Ann Rosenfeld M.D. writes that women are more likely to be depressed before an abortion than afterward, when they typically experience a sense of relief (The Healing Choice-23). D.R. Rosenfeld also believes that women who continue to feel lingering sadness may be experiencing a continuation of the pain that accompanied their pregnancy, rather than any effects of the termination (The Healing Choice-23)

Finally, women should consider societal problems within her community. Twelve percent of abortions are performed on females who are minors. Abortion rates are highest in the eighteen-nineteen year olds. Some people are on one side of the issue. However, the majority of the population somewhere lie’s in between. Many people favor it if at least one of the following is present: health risk to the mother or child, rape, incest, or a defective fetus. For those reasons, sixty-three percent of Catholics, seventy-eight percent of Protestants, and nine
