Raymond Poe vs. Don Craven
The race for State Representative of the 99th district appealed to me because of the way both men chose to run their campaigns. Republican, Raymond Poe and Democrat, Don Craven both ran honest campaigns, and were the only two candidates who did not run any negative advertisements. “It’s a battle between two nice men. Don Craven is a very good friend of mine and it should be a clean campaign. They are both gentlemen, both very nice people, and they’ll both work hard (Farmer 5).” The two candidates are both respectable men and regardless of the results, both ran a campaign to be proud of. Raymond Poe and Don Craven both have very strong opinions on issues regarding school budgeting. According to the June 5th issue of Illinois Times online the number one goal of Don Craven was to see that there is meaningful change to school funding. He wants to see that funding in the state of Illinois will be the same throughout schools in the suburbs, as well as Southern Illinois (Farmer 1). Raymond Poe agrees with Don Craven, but adds that schools should receive budgeting details in May impending the next school year. This means that schools will be able to know exactly what they will receive in order to plan ahead for the next
A major issue between the two candidates is support and opposition of the death penalty in Illinois. Poe states that he supports the death penalty as a deterrent to crime. He says that Gov. George Ryan’s moratorium on executions was appropriate. It provided time for study of the Illinois Criminal Justice System. Craven strongly opposes the death penalty on moral grounds. He says he “doubts the threat of execution is a deterrent for criminals and because the judicial system is ‘less than perfect’” (Olsen 2). Each stands on entirely different sides of the line on this issue, but each express strong support for arguments explaining their opinion of the death penalty. Several other issues were argued in several heated debates, but all were carried out with the utmost class and dignity as expressed in few elections. Despite the fact that I am a Democrat, when I voted this fall, I voted for Raymond Poe. I respect all he has accomplished in the past seven years and I agree with many of the principals that he supports. I have every reason to believe that he will continue to help Springfield grow economically as well as agriculturally. I also respect the way in which he ran his campaign and all of his previous campaigns. He never takes a shot at his opponent’s character; he only attacks the issues. For that I respect him not only politically, but also as a man. It’s refreshing and rare to have a politician I feel as though I can trust. In the end I believe the better man for this position won. With this said Donald Craven was, in my opinion, an excellent candidate to challenge Raymond Poe, but the incumbent state representative was too strong for him this election. I hope to hear more for Donald Craven politically in the future. His background in the legal system combined with the respectful way he ran his campaign should help him in any other offices he chooses to run for in the future. Raymond Poe will be the State Representative for the 99th district for two more years. Raymond Poe has strong beliefs in agriculture and farming. He stresses these issues in debates. However, the recent addition of urban Springfield to the 99th District may not favor his
