Sleep Deprivation

Students need sleep in order to focus and learn to the best of their abilities. But sadly many students are sleep deprived. These students don’t receive the necessary 8 ½ to 9 hours of sleep to function at their peak (Simurda, 2001). One way for students to get the necessary amount of sleep is for them to have good sleeping habits. Many teenagers don’t know the right time to go to bed. They tend to stay up longer than recommended either watching TV, doing homework or some other activity (Simurda 2001). This causes them to get insufficient periods of sleep. A way to counteract these negative sleeping habits is to have students learn about good sleeping habits when they are young. Students who have been educated when they were younger about sleep deprivation, and have learned to have good sleeping habits will be better prepared when they older to get the necessary amount of sleep.

In order to test this hypothesis research should be done extensively. The best research method that can be used to test the hypothesis is a longitudinal study. A longitudinal study is a good research method to use because it creates an in-depth observation that can give great detail in the progression of a student from a younger age to an


In this longitudinal study there will be no control group. The researcher will rather observe how well just the subject group learns and applies good sleeping habits from a pre-pubescent age to teenage years.

To carry out this study their will have to be a researcher for each individual subject. After the subjects have been chosen from a stratified random sample they will go into a program that teaches them proper sleeping habits. After that subject has passed the program an individual researcher will be assigned to the subject. The researcher will then place cameras in the home of the subject. The cameras will automatically turn on once a subject applies pressure to the bed. The cameras will be used so the researchers can observe if their subject applies the learned sleeping habits. If the subject sleeps at the proper time as learned in the program the researcher will not have to reinforce the proper sleep times. If the subject does not apply the learned sleep habits the researcher will have to reinforce the importance of applying the sleep habits learned in the program. The observation will last from grades 5 to 12. If a subject does not sleep at home he/she is then required to carry a sleep journal to inform the researchers of periods of sleep.

From this study researchers should find that this program will improve the sleeping habits of pre-teens and teenagers. As the subjects improve there sleeping habits they will be able to get the necessary amount of sleep to function at their best. Once the subjects are learning at their peak ability grades and overall well being will improve.

The target group for this study are teenage students that are entering, or in puberty. Teenage students are the most suspectable to sleep deprivation. Since they are going through puberty their sleeping habits tend to get more mixed up. The teenage students need at least 8 ½ hours of sleep.
