Similarities Between Odin And Zeus

The main similarity, most important and most obvious is their appearance. It is amazing that Odin and Zeus, two gods from different regions and different beliefs, be so similar to each other in appearance. Almost all of the descriptions of the two gods depict them both as large, powerful men. They were not obese or fat gods but rather tall and having a very large m

egative interpretation. This was necessary to give intimidation to mortals and gods who thought about doing something wrong, destructive or chaotic. They had the same very important, and very noble responsibility and both fulfilled it wonderfully from their great dwellings high in the sky.

They both lived in places that were the heavens of their myths. Their dwellings were both high above, but connected to, the earth. Zeus resided on Mt. Olympus, a high mountain, and Odin lived in Asgard, a giant palace in the sky, connected to earth by a bridge. Mt. Olympus, based on the myth, was a very high mountain where the gods met. The sky palace of Asgard like Mt Olympus was also the meeting place of all of the gods. The reason both Odin and Zeus lived high above the land was to allow them both to watch over the rest of the world and its inhabitants. This was necessary to fulfill their responsibilities. To review, the distinct similarities between Asgard, Odin’s home and Mt. Olympus, Zeus’ home, were that they were both in the sky high above the mortals and common people, but were connected to the earth. Both were the perfect observation point to view the entire land and all of its inhabitants, and both were the heaven like meeting place for the gods in their respective mythologies. They both lived high in the sky in order to observe mortals and gods but their interaction with those mortals and gods was even more similar.

There is a major correlation in their responsibilities. Odin’s responsibility to uphold the laws that he recorded on his spear is very similar to Zeus in that Zeus was known for upholding the law and social order.
