Stem cell research has been one of the most debated issues of the year. It is a subject that has divided political parties, governments and religions. Though there are rewards and benefits to stem cell research, the moral and ethical ramifications behind it are causing a paradigm shift. Though I view the situation as a clear-cut ethical debate, many scientists view stem cell research as a means by which to better our society. But how can the taking of innocent unborn lives for experimental purpose be a tool to improving society?

In conclusion, the extraction of stem cells from human embryos denies a person the right to life. Any life, no matter how small, is precious. As our president said in an address to this nation on August 9, 2001, “I worry about a culture that devalues life and believe as your President I have an important obligation to foster and encourage respect for life in America and throughout the world.”

Still, supporters of stem cell research argue that the embryos left over from vitro fertilization are destined to die anyway, and these embryos should be donated to science instead of being wasted. C. Ben Mitchell of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity states, “The fact that they are very young human beings does not therefore give us the right to use them in destructive research for the benefit of others.” He
