The Carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen cycles

Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus all play a big role in our environment and how things prosper or not. Carbon (C) which is found in all organic compounds, make up a plants’ body and at any given point, the atom can be respired and returned to the atmosphere. In water, it would be returned to the inorganic carbonate in solution. Nitrogen (N) is an essential component to living organisms, fourth behind oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. Phosphorus (P) is “a natural element found in rocks, soils and our own bodies!” (Phosphorus Pollution). It is essential for animals and plants and is a common ingredient, as is nitrogen, in fertilizers.

Carbon is an essential element in all living organisms. The carbon cycle is the transferring of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air or water by plants through photosynthesis (solar energy). A carbon atom makes this journey about once every three years. Carbon can be transferred from plants to algae, to shellfish to animals that feed on the shellfish and respired back into the air as CO2. It can also be released into the atmosphere by combustion of fossil fuels. It takes millions of years for carbon to come from sediment of algae and phytoplankton. However, we take that form and transfer

My role in the nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus cycles may seem minute when global figures are viewed. However, there are things that I can do to help minimize usage of these valuable resources. The first thing I can do is to be more conscious of how much fertilizer I apply to my lawns and gardens. Lawn fertilizer contains nitrogen and phosphorus for both the roots and green growth. I will apply it more sparingly if at all in the future. To help with carbon and nitrogen being put into the atmosphere, I can drive less, get a fuel efficient car, and make sure the windows are covered in both winter and summer. This will reduce the amount of oil I need to keep my house. I will also use more fans instead of automatically turning on our air conditioner. These are just some small things that I can do to help in the big picture. The most important thing I can do is to also teach my children why I am doing these things so that they are more aware.
