Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Suicide in 1997 took the lives of 30,535 Americans (11.4 per population of 100,000). While suicide amoung ages 15-24 has only increased to 11% in the 10-14 age group the suicide rate has increased to 104%. This is and will continue to be a problem through out the world.

It is a hope to many that the suicide rate amoung all age groups can decrease. In order for this to be achived more education is needed on the subject. I am interested in this subject because of it's impact on people. I enjoy learning why people do things they do and helping troubled people get their life back on track. The elements of people and their actions will continue to be interesting to me. I think the importance in helping this sitiatuion is around you. Someone you feel close to if not you you yourself might have a problem which could eventually lead to the final act of suicide.

In this report I will share with the reader signes of suicide, prevention, true experiences, and ways to get involved. As well as my experience in working to prevent acts which can lead to suicide.

Youth Suicide is now the second leading cause of

Youth who have made previous attempts at suicide should be considered to be at an extremely high risk, especially if he/she received no treatment for a past attempt. One of every teen that attempts suicide succeeds. But 15 percent of past attempters commit suicide in other attempts. Where as only 1.5 percent of adults commit suicide through other attempts.

Four out of five people who commit suicide show signs of depression or have been diagnosed with clinical depression. Some warning signs of clinical depression are, a depressed mood, loss of interest in most activities, significant weight loss or gain, significant change in sleep habits, extreem slowness, loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness, the ability not to concentrate, and thoughts of death or suicide. (American Psychiatric Assosociation) Some factors that cause depression are dysfunction in the home, physical abuse, pressure to suceed, interpersonal problems with peers, and financial or legal problems. Some other common warning signs of suicide include talk about suicide, having trouble eating or sleeping, drastic changes in behaivor, giving away prize possessions, previous attempts, taking unnessary risks, recent loss, preoccupied with death or dying, loss interest in personal apperance, increase of use with drugs and alcohol, loss in interest of hobbies, work, !

or school, withdrawling from social activities, and making final arrangements incase of death. (Youth Suicide) Anyone who exibits five or more of the following should be considered expreemly high persons of risk. These problems should then be resolved quickly through one of the many prevention programs for treayment.

The gay and lesbian youth being considered as a high risk group continues to be debated. Based on studies only 6 percent more lesbian youth attempt suicide compared to heterosexual girls. On the other hand the rate between gay males is around seven times higher than heterosexual males.(Teen Suicide) The reason this subject continues to be debated is because of the many people whose true sexual orientation isn't known or could be different from the way it was perceived.
