Sports Athletes: How Do They Effect Us Off The Court

Sports Athletes: How do they effect us off the court?

As a young man growing up watching basketball, Michael Jordan was one of my icons. Many people would agree that Michael Jordan is the best basketball player to ever play the game. Just like Michael Jordan, many other athletes have become idols to children all around the world; we see them on television advertisements, in magazines, even in newspapers. While growing up, kids watch these athletes in hopes that one-day they will be like them. These icons represent more than just athleticism; moreover, they symbolize wealth, freedom, and the American Dream. To be like Mike, you have to do things like Mike, which means buy the products he promotes. Seeing notorious athletes on television grabs children's attention; they no longer want to flip the channel or leave the room. Instead, they want to see what these athletes are talking about. Companies recognize that sports athletes are icons to kids all around the world. Using this knowledge, companies are endorsing these famous athletes to appear in their commercials. Kids want to be just like their icons, so they want the product the athlete is promoting. It does not matter what the product is. Whether it is shoes, deodorant or even food from McDonald's, kids want to have the product for themselves. By paying these athletes millions of dollars to say a few words on television, companies are increasing their sales. Why should they hire an unknown actor to do their commercials, when they can get a well known, lov
