Spiders
Classification and Description 3Reported Cases of Poisonous Arachnid Bites 7 When the word insect is thought of or heard, most people usually have a mental picture of such a thing as a fly or beetle. These bugs are not particularly liked by the general population, but if that is the case, people often just turn up their noses and step on or swat at the disgusting critter. Either way, these bugs are seldom thought of as actually being dangerous. On the other hand, when people think about spiders, they imagine some poisonous creature that is threatening to their very existence. The truth is that approximately 95% of the time there are nothing to fear whenever a spider or other arachnid is around. It is almost guaranteed that if someone is too close, the spiders will always be the ones who will try to get away first. However, there are certain species that are very dangerous, and the best idea is to just stay far away from the
Except for the funnel-web spider, it is not very common for someone to go to the emergency room because of a small bite. However, there are cases that do require medical attention, and if ignored, these bites can pose a serious threat to a person’s health. Although it may sound like common sense, using antibacterial soap and clean water to wash the bite is very important. An antiseptic such as iodine or hydrogen peroxide may prevent the sting or bite from becoming infected. It is a good idea to collect the arachnid if possible so that a positive identification can be made. This allows the victim to see what symptoms may be expected, and to see whether or not it is necessary to see a physician. Always remember that simple first aid procedures are only of limited help, and if there are any questions or concerns, a doctor should be contacted immediately. It could quite literally mean the difference between life and death. Probably the most well known poisonous arachnid is the black widow. There are approximately ten types of black widows, of which only two or three are recognized by most people. As it turns out, these two or three types are also the only ones that are actually threatening to people or animals. The Lactrodectus mactans, more commonly known as the southern black widow, is the most dangerous. When bitten, the victim has difficulty breathing for several minutes to a half-hour. The person's blood pressure rises, and he develops severe stomachaches, along with very high fevers. Unlike most other species of spider, the male black widow is the one that is hardly ever seen.
