Her family moved to Winthrop, Massachusetts in 1936. At age 7, Sylvia studied the viola. In 1940, her father died. Sylvia attended Smith College. While attending, she published her first work in Seventeen Magazine in 1950. Her story was called “And Summer Will Not Come Again.” She also worked for Mademoiselle Magazine and published “Ode on a Bitter Plum.”

Between 1960 and 1961, Sylvia published a number of poems. In Crossing The Water, the theme in at least 5 poems in the book to deal with personal features. Sylvia may had written these poems because this was about the time she found out her husband was having an affair. She felt “ugly” and decided to express her thoughts in a poem. Ironically enough, the last poem in this book happens to be called “Life,” something she didn’t get to experience to the fullest.
