TCP IP Fixes
TCP/ IP is the main protocol of the Internet, the backbone so to speak. It also has heavy use in WAN's. TCP (transmission control protocol) handles the breaking down of information into datagrams and reassembling the data at their destination. Also it handles re-transmissions and reordering the information once received. IP (internet protocol) is responsible to route the datagrams to the right address. Although they work together neither is concerned about the others job. TCP feeds the datagrams to IP and doesn't care how they get to their destination. And IP doesn't care about the content or number of packets to be sent. Unlike other protocols TCP/ IP needs to be configured. The configuration may be done automatically, through a DHCP server, or manually. But since it was designed to be indestructible, after you get passed the initial install, it should run for quite awhile without much trouble. Troubleshooting TCP / IP can be quite involved and tricky, so as with any attempt at trouble shooting a problem, starting with the easy solution first is always recommended. 1The basic components of TCP/ IP are the IP address and the subnet mask. The IP address is a series of four numbers separated by periods. A portion of
The next test would be to "ping" the machines NIC. To ping the NIC open the MS-DOS window and type these commands at the C prompt: "C:*PING 127.0.0.1 Where the IP address of 127.0.0.1 is the common address of your own NIC card, this test should revel these results. If the IP and subnet address are correct then the next check is to see if the NIC is configured properly. Type WINIPCFG at the DOS prompt and the IP configuration box should pop up. Here you can check that you have indicated the correct network adapter, or make a new selection from the drop down menu. It will also confirm the IP and subnet address as well as indicate the Adapter address. PINGing 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
