The Death Of Marylin Monroe

Each poem that is written holds a feeling to it only the author can experience from writing it. As each reader picks up that poem and reads it, it can be interpreted as a memory or a feeling only that person is familiar with. No person can relate to a poem the same way the person before them did. This is a small part of poetry and all the ways it can be read. In a poem by Sharon Olds she explains the feeling around Marilyn Monroe’s death. A feeling most of us remember but no one can put in plain words.

In a short 25-lined poem Sharon Olds explains the emptiness many men and woman felt when Marilyn Monroe was pronounced dead. Without exactly stating what Marilyn Monroe was, we paint a picture in our heads of an icon, whose death was astonishing. Miss Monroe wasn’t only a beautiful woman that men looked at as a dream girl, but a role model for women everywhere. Her stunning good looks made her stick out of a crowd like a streak of lightning. Her girlie figure and always perfect-hair made her what everyone wanted to be. When Marilyn Monroe died her dream girl imaged died with her. Men everywhere missed her sleek moves and ideal breasts. The thought of her cold body and pale skin was

This was a huge loss in my life and I will never forget Eric and his family. To this day I continue to be friends with Melina and peek into his room, hoping to find him sitting there. Like in the poem by Sharon Olds, I too had a “dream boy”. I can’t say that this is exactly like the death of Marilyn Monroe but to me it has many similarities. It is a loss that haunts me and dreams crushed. Like I said before not every reader can feel what the author intended them to feel but we all have our own interpretations.

His girlfriend’s plans weren’t as exciting as he might of thought they were. Late that night him and his girlfriend had gotten a hotel room in Chicago with a few friends. As a birthday surprise his girlfriend handed him heroine. At the time Eric did not know it was deadly but would soon find out. I am not too sure what exactly came next but I remember the phone call made to our house that morning, a phone called that crashed my dreams. Eric was the un-touchable; he was what I daydreamed about. He was my role model, the one I wanted to be like and be with. At first I didn’t understand but a few days later at the wake it hit me. All the times he teased me and made me laugh were over. I couldn’t believe it. His pale skin and lifeless body made me sick to my stomach. My dreams ended as soon as I saw him lying there. I was so helpless and wanted nothing more then to at least say good-bye. All those feelings of a small crush that formed years back became strong again. I knew it wasn’t my fault but it haunted me like I did something wrong. His body seemed flat from gravity and his hands stiff, I could almost smell death in the air.

Not everyone can relate to this poem although some may try and even people with similar experiences say they have felt that way. I too can relate to a death that overwhelmed not only myself but also many others. Back in 1995 I had a friend of the family die sudde
