The Decaying Society

Growing numbers of homosexual couples have been popping up all over the country and the world. The newly formed Gay Rights movement is causing people today to open their arms up and accept everyone. This is the way the world should be. No one should be shunned away from society based on their personality and views of life. However, the idea of allowing same-sex marriages to take place in our churches or places of religious worship is posing a threat to age old traditions based on the Bible. The word of God spoken to us through the Bible has set a foundation for human morality thousands of years. “One of the most attractive features of the early Christian communities […] was their radical sexual ethic and their deep commitment to family values” (Ostling 50). God has not only provided us with rules to live our lives by, but God has also given us religious figures to guide us in the right direction. Therefore, the increased amounts of religious leaders who have began to !

violate the rules of the Bible by marrying homosexual couples thus proves society is slowly losing its values. Religious leaders must be there to guide us in the search for spiritual salvation and if they can not, then all guid

The rising number of churches condoning homosexual marriages is beginning to become overwhelming. The various churches range from miniscule unheard denominations to large churches such as the Duke Chapel which is associated with the Methodist denomination. The Duke Chapel is “[…] known not just as a place of worship but as a symbol of the Methodist affiliated school itself” (Cheng 8A). However, the allowance of same-sex unions is not based on the chapel’s religious affiliation, rather it based on the idea that equal rights should be given to every member of the University. Yet, this decision clearly violates the views of the Methodist Church. Many people are however beginning to think that marriage is for anyone and everyone. “Marriage is for people who love; homosexuals love; ergo marriage is for them” (Stengel 52). Then why is allowing homosexual marriages such a violation of religious society?

The effects of these choices pose a dangerous threat to our society. The growing numbers reported in the 2000 census show that many more homosexuals are ‘coming out of the closet.’ If the church steps aside and begins to support these clear violations of the Bible, then what really is next? “Adultery would be next, critics charged” (Ostling 48). By accepting one sin, the door is swung open to allow others to become accepted. The word of God would inevitably slowly begin to deteriorate. “Eventually everything will become alright” (Vlastakis Interview). The door is open for everyone to come forth and proclaim their justification for the sin.

Anything straying from this traditional union is considered wrong and sinful. Many religious figures including Cathy Vlastakis, who is clergy in the United Methodist Church, believe that homosexuality is a way out for some people. It is a way out that can closely be associated with alcoholism. For those peopl
