The Jesus I Never Knew
In The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey explores the life of Jesus, as he explains, "'from below,' to grasp as best I can what it must have been like to observe in person the extraordinary events unfolding in Galilee and Judea" as Jesus traveled and taught. Yancey examines three fundamental questions: who Jesus was, why He came, and what He left behind. Step by step, scene by scene, Yancey probes the culture into which Jesus was born and grew to adulthood; his character and mission; his teachings and miracles; his legacy--not just as history has told it, but as He Himself intended it to be. The book “the Jesus I never knew” takes a different look at Jesus Christ and how he lived. Questions are asked as to how he lived and what he believed in. it starts by tackling another question, do we really know Jesus Christ? . In today’s world he is depicted as a mister Rogers type character, but the author tries to show us that this can’t be as black and white as the church would try to make it buy asking “what government would execute mister Rogers? Yancey's re-creation of the Gospel story alone is worth the price of the book, but throughout its pages he also weaves in keen observations on a multitude of topics: how God relates to human suffering, why Jesus left the church to be his body, why God seems to prefer the poor, why we need to reflect on Jesus' death, to name a few. People try to find faith through miracles. The book shows that this is not what God wants from us. He wants us to have faith and believe and through believing would we be able to have miracles. This book helped me to grasp a different outlook of the Adventist faith. For me this was a little difficult because I grew in the church of the Nazarene, which had a great impact upon me life at such a young age. The cross over to Adventism that my mother took part in left me puzzled as a youngster. I had such question such as was this Jesus a different Jesus as to the one at my old church. I believe that because of this to this day I still haven’t really felt as at home in the religion as I did I the last. I believe that there are a lot of people out there that have the same feeling as me. And if we had had the chance to read this book at that critical moment in our lives that the cross over would have been different. They are many that have drawn pictures of Jesus and how they belie
