THE GANGSTER'S OF THE 1920'S
The mob started in the early 1900's. Irish immigrants mostly ran it. James "Big Jim" Colosino was the first mob boss. He only dealt in prostitution. John Torrio was Jim's Nephew and started working with Jim. Torrio saw a way to make more money with the passing of the 18th amendment. Big Jim was not interested but that did not stop Torrio. In 1920 Big Jim was murdered and Torrio was the new boss. He sided with Al Capone and together they made millions of dollars. Torrio tried to unite all of the gangs together and it resulted in gang wars. In 1925 several attempts were made on Torrio's life. He was shot in one of the attempts and spent some time in the Hospital. When he recovered he made Capone the boss and retired with over 30 million Capone proceeded his reign of terror as he sold booze, gambling and prostitution. [It is estimated that Al Capone made over 60 million dollars in booze alone] a quote from an Al Capone was quoted in the book Mr. Capone as saying, [All I ever did was to sell beer and whiskey to people.
