The short story, “The Storm” by Kate Chopin, is a wonderfully written piece of literature that is definitely before its time. The storm outside is a direct connection or prelude to the storm brewing inside. “They did not heed the crashing torrents, and the roar of the elements made her laugh as she lay in his arms. She was a revelation in that dim, mysterious chamber; as white as the couch she lay upon. Her firm, elastic flesh that was knowing for the first time its birthright, was life a creamy lily that the sun invites to contribute its breath and perfume to the undying life of the world.” (page, 415) The impact of what occurred between the two lovers would not have been as significant if the setting would have been any different. The storm represents their long awaited passion, and the calm following the storm is their ability to show no guilt or remorse for what they commit. Just like a storm, love will come whenever it feels and with no warning to the damage that it may cause.

The second aspect of the definition of the word setting is the place in which something occurs or develops. Place not only refers to the actual physical location, but also to the cultural, spiritual, and frame of mind in which the story takes place. This is the most commonly known form of setting. It is also the most often used.

The writer mentions the color yellow three times in the poem. The color yellow, as with all other colors, has both a positive and negative meaning. However, the negative tone of this poem calls for the use of the negative description. Yellow can represent unfulfilled dreams, sorrow, being cut-off from a loved one, and also the desire to reject new ideas.

The main thing that all six works of literature had in common was the fact that setting always has an enormous effect on the perception of an ending. With this newfound knowledge it is possible to voluntarily change the way the events of your life will unfold. Getting rid of the negative outside influences will greatly increase your chance at accessing change. It is always your choice to make.
