Asad Khalil's a psychopath with a blood feud against United States of America. Asad's family was killed in an American bombing of Libya on April 15, 1986. The bombs were dropped on Asad's hometown of Al Azziziyah. When his town was bombed his family was killed. Asad's father was already dead but his mother, 2 brothers and 2 sister were killed in the attack. When the attack occurred, Asad was 15 and he was with his girlfriend at the time. In Libyan culture this is a big taboo that is punishable by fifty lashes or being stoned to death. The bombs killed Asad's girlfriend Bahira the same night, but not by the bombs. When the bombs went off she started to scream hysterically alerting attention to where they were. If they were caught the would both die so Asad strangled his girlfriend to death, then packed up his pray

John is also an anarchist who is an anti-establishmentarian who works for the government (irony). John wants to destroy or change the government from the inside. John makes very witty comments to everyone; he is the class clown per-say. John has a thing about the FBI and the CIA, that is that he hates them, but while working for the ATTF he becomes one of them. So John pretty much is a smart-alick with a shield (badge) and gun. John changed the course of the book by attempting to be one step ahead of Asad's moves.

John Corey is a ATTF guy who is ex-NYPD homicide now working for the Muslim terrorist section of the ATTF. John took an early retirement from the NYPD when he was gunned down on 102nd street in New York City. He was shot three times but lived to tell about it. This didn't stop Mr. Corey from having a promising career working for the ATTF, except for the whole sniper incident with Asad. John is a mastermind when it comes to crime. He can solve a case before any other detective can figure out where the crime was committed.
