The Patriot

“The Patriot” starts in South Carolina in 1776. The movie is a family’s story about what they went through during the American Revolution. Mel Gibson stars as Benjamin who was a hero at Fort Wilderness during the French and Indian War, and a widower with seven children. Benjamin is part of the assembly in South Carolina. Benjamin is a respected man in the south because of the role he played in the battle at Fort Wilderness.

In the beginning of the movie Benjamin tells his family they are going to Charleston because the South Carolina assembly is meeting there. While they are in Charleston they stay with their aunt Charlotte. Gabriel, Benjamin’s oldest son, decides to sign up with the militia to fight against the British for independence. Benjamin gets angry and they return home. A few moths later Gabriel writes his younger brother Thomas and tells him what is going on in the war. In Gabriel’s letter he writes about the fall of Charlestown to the British under command of Lord Cornwallis. Gabriel says that the north is also not doing well due to starvation and low moral. Gabriel ends his letter saying he is about to march south to fight the “red coats.” One night Gabriel shows up at the house wounded, while the “

The diary of Cornwallis tells Benjamin many things about Cornwallis; it shows Benjamin that Cornwallis thinks that militiamen are stupid and that he is very arrogant. The battle that defeats Cornwallis before he goes to Yorktown is the last battle in the movie. The militia knows Cornwallis’s weakness because Benjamin read his diary. They tell the regulars or the trained army this and they play on Cornwallis’s weakness in the last battle. When the British approach the “rebels” they only see the militia and Cornwallis thinks this is wonderful and it will be easy to beat them. They start to fire at each other after about two rounds of firing, the militia retreat and Cornwallis orders his men to follow them, because “he wants to end the war today.” This is where Cornwallis falters because as the British go over the hill the militia retreated over there were hundreds of regulars waiting for them at the bottom of the hill. The men go into hand-to-hand combat. While this is going on the lieutenant who killed Gabriele and Thomas sees Benjamin and they get into a sword fight. As they are fighting, you see Benjamin drop to his knees. You think that the lieutenant is going to behead Benjamin, and in the last second Benjamin moves his head and stabs the lieutenant with a bayonet. At the very end of the movie it very briefly talks about how Yorktown was won back and how Cornwallis was ashamed and would not come out and shake hands to symbolize the war was over.

While this was a very moving movie, the media portrays things that did not happen or they embellish the truth to make it more interesting. This is done all the time and this movie is no different. The movie started in almost the middle of the war. “The Patriot” was based on battles that were going on in the south. Many people were still choosing sides. The Loyalists wanting nothing to do with war for a few different reasons and th
