The Process of Communication

Communication is a complex process. When people communicate, there is a sender, the person talking, and a receiver, the person who should be listening. Both of which are 100% responsible for any miscommunication. It is up to the sender to talk clearly so that the receiver can understand. It is also up to the receiver to ask questions when something is not understood completely.
Every time we send or receive a message, there are filters that could interrupt the message. There are several filters semantics, emotions, language, attitudes, role expectations, gender specific focus, and non-verbal messages, all of which can effect the conversation on the senders side as well as the receivers side.
Semantics are the words that are chosen to communicate or get your message across. You need to avoid using derogatory remarks when communicating with others. It is important to use words that will be understood and not cause any tension between you and the receiver. It is equally important for the receiver, when giving feed back, to watch their use of words as well.
Your emotions towards the topic you are talking about is another type of filter. If you are angry or excited, it will show. This could have a positive or a negative impact towards the conversation. If you are talking about a place to vacation and you are excited and smiling about this place it will send a message to the receiver that you are sincere. If you explain the place without changing the tone of your voice and do not seem excited, the receiver probably will not even look it up on the map. The emotions in the conversation play a role in the receivers" side as well. If they do not seem to be listening attentively, not asking questions, and just do not seem interested, their attitude will be portrayed to the sender. .
             .
Language is another filter that may get in the way of the message being sent. When the sender and the receiver are from different cultures or countries there could be a problem with the word selection used.
