The Process of Communication
Communication is a complex process. When people communicate, there is a sender, the person talking, and a receiver, the person who should be listening. Both of which are 100% responsible for any miscommunication. It is up to the sender to talk clearly so that the receiver can understand. It is also up to the receiver to ask questions when something is not understood completely. Every time we send or receive a message, there are filters that could interrupt the message. There are several filters semantics, emotions, language, attitudes, role expectations, gender specific focus, and non-verbal messages, all of which can effect the conversation on the senders side as well as the receivers side. Semantics are the words that are chosen to communicate or get your message across. You need to avoid using derogatory remarks when communicating with others. It is important to use words that will be understood and not cause any tension between you and the re
ceiver. It is equally important for the receiver, when giving feed back, to watch their use of words as well. Another filter is role expectation. When you are having a conversation with a group of adults you will talk differently than if you were talking to a little girl who is being mischievous. The same goes for talking to your boss and talking with a group of your friends. Hopefully you will not use foul language when talking to your boss or a child, and when talking to your friends and adults the conversation will go in a different direction. All of these filters could get in the way of a conversation, on the receivers’ side and the senders’ side. It is important for people trying to communicate to be as clear as possible and not to let these filters get in the way of the communication process.
