The thing that is embarrassing is the way that we spend Memorial Day which is suppose to be a day to honor the men who fought for our freedom. As mentioned in the introduction, today people have a wonderful time on this day. They would go out and have fun and celebrate it by having parties and picnics. It is obvious that these people weren’t caring about where their men were while fighting or whether they were alive, they only cared that they received their freedom, and that is what is embarrassing.

After returning from war many of the men wanted people to know exactly how repugnant of an experience it was. They wrote about their encountering with death and the hardships of war. Some of the writers felt that it was necessary to intensify their stories to meet the challenge of having the people realize what the war was about. Tim O’Brien expressed his feelings in the novel The Things They Carried using a series of war stories. These stories were put in the novel to make the reader feel as though it was happening to them. He keeps the reader in a state of wonder. He will say that a war story can’t be believed, but then will tell a story that will make it seem as though it can be believed.

By doing this the reader is left wondering the question of how to tell a true war story. This issue is addressed in the chapter “How to Tell a True War Story.” According to O’Brien, “pure Hollywood, untrue in the way all such stories are untrue. Yet even if it did happen- and maybe it did, anything’s possible- even then you know it can’t be true, because a true war story does not depend upon that kind of truth. Absolute occurrence is irrelevant.”(83). This precise criteria is used to interpret whether a story is true or not. Dalton’s Johnny Got His Gun is known as a genuine war story, which means that the fact that it is factual or not doesn’t matter. It is nauseating and odious knowing that at a young age this boy had his life taken from him while fighting for the freedom that he will never be able to enjoy. Dalton Trumbo talks about a twenty-year old boy lying in bed without arms, legs, a nose, a mouth, eyes, or ears. There is nothing moral about this situation.
