The Two Ocean War
The Two Ocean War by Samuel E. Morison is a extraordinary masterpiece on the history of U.S navel operations in World War II. The Book is illustrated with 35 Photographs and 54 charts and maps of key engagements. The novel has precise records Of the battle from Pearl Harbor to the war of attrition between submarines and convoys in the Atlantic, through Midway and Guadalcanal, to the invasion of Europe, to Okinawa, and the final surrender of the Japanese. The historical context of the book plays a vital role in the civilization that we live in today. The United States involvement in World War II was key to the Allies' success in the war. By the United States providing economic support to their Allies, denying support to the enemy, distributing information, creating key strategies and putting forth so much force in tactical battle the Allies won the war. In essence, if the United States was not involved in the Allied movement against Europe, the European Axis powers would have won the war. The European Axis powers, which consisted of Germany at this time, invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Poland was a weak force. There were peace talks occurring up until about November 27, 1941. At that time, negotiations had come to a halt. The United States put its troops on alert. On December 6, 1941, President Roosevelt made an appeal for peace to the Emperor of Japan. Later that day the U.S. decoded thirteen parts of a fourteen-part message that presented the possibility of a Japanese attack. Approximately 9 a.m. on December 7,1941, the last part of the fourteen part message was decoded mentioning many ties with the United States. An hour later, a message from Japan was decoded as instructing the Japanese embassy to deliver the fourteen part message at 1 p.m. The U.S., received this message and sent a commercial telegraph to Pearl Harbor because radio communication had been down. He invaded Poland. American policy toward European war was dictated by the public's overwhelming desire to keep out of it, at any price. President Roosevelt adopted the policy of neutral patrol. The idea of neutral patrol was to create and protect a neutral zone extending an average of 300 miles off the American coastline, except off Canada. Samuel Morison's "The Two Ocean War" has given me new insight and admiration for U.S Navy and Marines for they showed courage and sheer determination in battling the great militaries of this age. I cherish the vivid and descriptive battles that were given and one can only hope that we have learned from some of the mistakes that
