(In addition to an already existing island restoration plan on Matakohe/Limestone Island).

Historically, conservation in New Zealand has been focused on the protection of individual species. This has involved the removal of threatened species from seriously affected areas. As recently as the early 1990s conservation was still largely species focused. While protection plans for individual species are still invaluable as conservation tools, and are often the only solution for species that are under extreme threat and face certain demise, the ecosystems that contained those species are coming under increased pressure and attack from all quarters. This is especially so from introduced pests and weeds.

Experts in the conservation field in earlier times became increasingly aware that restoration of degraded mainland sites and offshore islands was in fact quite an achievable goal.

These understandings were gained from research surrounding the management plan for Kokako at Mapara which had adopted more intensive pest control programmes. Results

5. A vegetation map of Matakohe /Limestone island will be produced or a pre existing vegetation map will be used in order to identify to a potential site for an ex situ population of T.mathewsii. Once the site is identified and a quadrat of 2mx2m is established soil measurements such as moisture and pH will be recorded. Biological and ecological requirements of the species must be taken into account when the site is selected, as the success of translocation depends to a large extent on the plant requirements being as closely mirrored as possible in its new habitat.

The growth stage at which plant material is removed. Is the damage done justified? Where and when is it unethical to collect material? What parties/groups and individuals need to be informed and which do not? Are the proper respects being paid to the right people or organisations?
