Toasting To Adulthood Illegally

By the time a person reaches the age of 18, the responsibilities of adulthood knock on his or her door. Most will have graduated from high school and will know how to manage his or her life. At age 18, a person can vote, smoke, marry, take out loans, pay taxes, and die while serving for his or her country. The question remains, why can’t this person drink? The other problem with this law happens to go on in the courtrooms. Not only do the lawmakers of the United States feel teenagers can defend the country and vote, they can stand trial as an adults. For example, a fifteen-year old charged for murder will more than likely stand trial as an adult because of the actions the youth performed. The question becomes this; if we can act like adults, think like adults, and decide our fates like adults, then why can’t we drink?

The country shields its eyes from problems such as legal drinkers’ burdens. The lawmakers of this country only notice the bad things of underage drinking. For instance, President George W. Bush’s daughter, Jenna, was caught twice in one month for drinking illegally and purchasing it with a fake ID. Numerous times, other non-recognizable figures encounter the law and no publicity occurs afterward. The nation uses Bush’s daughter as an excuse to tell the citizens that teenagers and college students, in general, are irresponsible drinkers, when in fact it happens to be the complete opposite.

From a young adult’s point of view, the country tells us we are responsible people. The government gives us the choice to elect officials into office to create our laws. In addition, by the time a young male reaches the age 18, he becomes eligible for the selective services. He would fight for his country, the same country that tells him he will receive big honors when he dies in battle
