Tori Amos
Myra Ellen Amos was born on August 22, 1963 in Newton North Carolina. However, she was actually raised in Maryland by her father who was a Methodist preacher. Myra was musically talented from the young age of two and a half. She began playing the piano at this time in her life. By the time Myra was four she was singing and playing the piano in her father’s church choir. At age five Myra was considered a music prodigy and won a scholarship to Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory. While she was studying at Peabody, she became infatuated with Rock & Roll, particularly the music of Led Zepplin. Unfortunately, after six years of studying at Peabody Myra failed her re-entry audition because even after all those years of studying music she couldn’t read sheet music. Myra changed her name to Tori in her late teen years after a friend’s boyfriend told her she didn’t look like a Myra or an Ellen but more like a Tori. She thought about it for a bit and decided he was right so she used the name Tori from that day forward. Tori moved to LA in her late teen years to become a pop singer. This was the beginning of an aspiring career. Her move to LA landed her in a band called “Y Kan
In October of 1991 Tori released her hit single “Me And A Gun,” which tackled the emotive and disturbing topic of her rape by an armed “fan”. The song gained positive reviews throughout both the public and the media. Both the concerts and the EP (early production) sold well. Tori went on to record her first album as a singer/songwriter in January of 1992 called “Little Earthquakes”. Little Earthquakes featured the songs “Me And A Gun” and Crucify. This album sold very well and was the first of many to come. Tori released four albums after Little Earthquakes each becoming more of a success than the last. Tori refused to let the bands failure stop her from pursuing her career and kept on working hard to succeed in the music business. She went from singing pop metal to spare, haunting, semi confessional piano ballads. Tori continued to persevere in writing her own songs and eventually a tape of these reached Atlantic Records co-chairman Doug Morris. Doug felt that she definitely had talent but she wasn’t what the average American FM listener was looking for. He then decided to send her to the UK where he thought she would get a better reception. Tori followed Doug’s advice and moved to London in 1991 to start playing small-scale gigs around the capital. Tori moved to LA in her late teen years to become a pop singer. This was the beginning of an aspiring career. Her move to LA landed her in a band called “Y Kant Tori Read” which was a play on words that referred to her previous expulsion from Peabody. The band included other now famous artists including Matt Sorum, Steve Farris, and Vinny Coliauta to name a few. Unfortunately their first album was also the last because it was a complete failure. In October of 1991 Tori released her hit single “Me And A Gun,” which tackled the emotive and disturbing topic of her rape by an armed “fan”.
