At the turn of the twentieth century, new technology was no longer a privilege, but a necessity for an industrial nation. New things were being invented to make life more convenient and all in all easier for Americans. Initially, these new inventions, such as the car, and new medical technology (the x-ray) were being manufactured in very small amounts, meaning that the price of these items would be very high. In fact, only 8% of the homes (1900) owned a telephone, and there were only 8000 cars in the whole United States (hotmail sheet). By the early 1900’s, more inventions were being manufactured in larger amounts due to the assembly line. This would decrease the cost, therefore meaning that now the middle class, and even some low class people could afford these items. These inventions made transportation and distribution more efficient. In addition, these new technologies improved quality of life. Many supplies were shipped in trains making business more successful and more efficient. This started a new era of luxury and wealth for the bosses, and more job opportunities for the lower class people. All in all, technology made life better. Automobiles, which were brought into the U.S in 1911 by a man named Henry Ford, changed the world during the 20th century, particularly in the United States and other industrialized nations. (Textbook-pg15) He made cars more affordable even for the lower class Americans with the invention of the assembly line. This innovation made the production of cars easier and faster which decreased the cost, because there were now more being manufactured. From the growth of suburbs to the development of elaborate road and highway systems, the so-called horseless carriage has forever altered the modern landscape. The manufacture, sales, and servicing of automobiles have become key elements of industrial economies . But along with greater mobility and job creation, the automobile has brought noise and air pollution. This new mobility has also led to having automobile accidents, which ranked among the leading causes of death and injury throughout the world. Along with having promises, the car portrayed a number of challenges as well. One of these challenges was to keep the environment clean. With the cars burning fossil fuels, it would create a large amount of pollution, which would (in time) destroy our earth (as it is doing so today)(bio book). Another challenge would be to keep safe. As soon as the automobile industry took full motion, injuries of people doubled (Encarta) Because of the fact that people were not used to going so fast, they could not handle it, so many of the people got into accidents. This illustrates another problem with technology, which is evident today. Many people get into accidents with the new production of faster cars. The consumers go overboard and take it to the max when sometimes they cannot handle it, and they get into an accident.
