Satire: “The Flying Doctor”
“That is a striking sign that you are not well.” How does this idiotic physician’s comment fool a respected member of the bourgeoisie? While the farcical servant, Sganarelle, impersonates a doctor, a major trick is played on a landowner, Gorgibus, who should know better. “The Flying Doctor,” a French comedy by Molière, satirizes the bourgeoisie of the Seventeenth Century through improbable situations, comic characters, and slapstick action. Molière demonstrates satire through the use of improbable plot situations. The characters use unrealistic disguises to fool the middle class father, Gorgibus. Sganarelle, an uneducated servant, disguises himself as both a doctor and his imaginary brother. He does this simply by putting on and removing a physicians cloak and hat. The disguises and tricks used by the characters in the story are so obvious; it is ridiculous that the other characters can not figure them out. The “all lawyers are smart” stereotype does not apply for the lawyer, and the most cunning character of all is an uneducated servant. “The Flying Doctor” is a fast action play that satirizes the bourgeoisie of the Seventeenth Century. y a doctor. This sets the stage for Gorgibus to be fooled about Lucile’s whereabouts, and she is secretly married.
