Satire: “The Flying Doctor”
“That is a striking sign that you are not well.” How does this idiotic physician’s comment fool a respected member of the bourgeoisie? While the farcical servant, Sganarelle, impersonates a doctor, a major trick is played on a landowner, Gorgibus, who should know better. “The Flying Doctor,” a French comedy by Molière, satirizes the bourgeoisie of the Seventeenth Century through improbable situations, comic characters, and slapstick action. Molière demonstrates satire through the use of improbable plot situations. The characters use unrealistic disguises to fool the middle class father, Gorgibus. Sganarelle, an uneducated servant, disguises himself as both a doctor and his imaginary brother. He does this simply by putting on and removing a physicians cloak and hat.
