Satire: "The Flying Doctor-

"That is a striking sign that you are not well.
How does this idiotic physician's comment fool a respected member of the bourgeoisie? While the farcical servant, Sganarelle, impersonates a doctor, a major trick is played on a landowner, Gorgibus, who should know better. "The Flying Doctor,"" a French comedy by Moliere, satirizes the bourgeoisie of the Seventeenth Century through improbable situations, comic characters, and slapstick action.
Moliere demonstrates satire through the use of improbable plot situations. The characters use unrealistic disguises to fool the middle class father, Gorgibus. Sganarelle, an uneducated servant, disguises himself as both a doctor and his imaginary brother. He does this simply by putting on and removing a physicians cloak and hat. Unbelievably, Sganarelle's vernacular is filled with important sounding, but made up words, which encourages the idea that he is really a doctor. This ridiculous disguise fools Gorgibus, who should know better making this respected landowner appear ignorant. In fact, Sganarelle continually tricks the naive Gorgibus throughout the farce. He tricks Gorgibus into believing his daughter, Lucile, was sick and needed to be isolated in the Pavilion. This sets the stage for Gorgibus to be fooled about Lucile's whereabouts, and she is secretly married. In reality, this event could never happen that quickly, and most fathers would be more concerned and aware. Consequently, Moliere uses unlikely event to poke fun of Gorgibus, a member of the bourgeoisie who thinks he knows everything.
Comic characters also help to create a satire. Stereotypes are an example of comic characters. In "The Flying Doctor,"" the lawyer, whom everybody expects to be very intellectual, gets fooled by Sganarelle. The lawyer engages in a conversation with the doctor, who makes up words to make himself sound educated. The doctor's "gibberish- passes as real, intelligent words to the lawyer.
