Volleyball

The sport of volleyball is about 105 years old by now. The sport originated in the United States, and now is just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis. Today there are more than 46 millions of Americans who play volleyball. There are about 800 million players worldwide who play volleyball at least once a week. The history and rules describes the game of volleyball.

In the year 1895, William Morgan was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. He decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen that would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of volleyball, the sport of volleyball was called mitonette at the time. Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it to 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above average man’s head. During the demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps “volleyball” would be a more descriptive name for the sport.

Listed are some important dates that have to do with the game of vol

leyball. In the year 1895 the game was created. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of “volleyball” was played. In 1900 a special ball was designed for the sport. On 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (which is the set and spike) was introduced. Then in the year 1917, the game was changed from 21 to 15 points. In 1922, the first YMCA national championships were held in Brooklyn NY. 27 teams from 11 states were represented on that day.

Volleyball is a team sport played by two teams on a playing court divided by a net. The object of the game is for each team to send the ball regularly over the net to ground it, or in other words have it hit the ground or floor, on the opponent’s court and to prevent the ball from being grounded on its own court. The way you play the game is the ball is put into play by the right back-row player who serves the ball by hitting it over the net to the opponent’s court. A player is not allowed to hit the ball twice consecutively, except when attempting a block. The rally continues until the ball touches the ground or the floor or goes out or a team fails to return it to the opponent
