“I had always thought as a boy, that I was going to Harvard,” (10) says Du Bois. Harvard was Du Bois first choice in college and he did not go there when he first entered college because he did not have the money. He happened to go to Fisk University in Tennessee.

Du Bois said in his book Dusk Of Dawn, “When I learned that Harvard, seeking to shed something of its New England provincialism, was offering scholarships in various parts of the country, I immediately wrote, and to my astonishment of teachers and fellow students, not to mention myself, received Price Greenleaf Aid of $300.”

He had spent three years at Fisk but still decided to go Harvard because he felt that he could grow in society using this knowledge. There shows signs of determination for W.E.B. Du Bois. Leaving a school for another shows, that he want something else and was going to do it no matter how it came at him.

At Fisk University Du Bois learned all about how segregation played into the role of society in which he lived in. He saw discrimination where he lived and in ways that he never imagined. One of the first things he saw was separation on railroad, separations in living quarters throughout the cities and towns, and insults and violence in the streets.

He also stats in his book Dusk Of Dawn “…I asked nothing of Harvard but the tutelage of teachers and the freedom of the library. I was quite voluntarily and willingly outside its social life. I knew nothing of it and cared nothing for fraternities and clubs. Most of those that dominated the Harvard life of my day were unknown to me even by name. I asked no fellowship of my fellow students.” He did have a social life with the people of the town but just not in Harvard. (12) There shows great determination to accomplish a goal. Going to a school without having any relationship with anyone, clubs, etc. would be pretty tough for the average fellow. But Du Bois was an above average fellow and took on that challenged to get his education and not let anyone distract him from doing so. (12)

The teachers he met were the only people at Harvard that Du Bois conversed with and spent his time with. He, as stated earlier, had no interest with anyone else. He never had to stay up late doing homework, researching, or studying because he spent all his time in the library and usually had his life planned the minute when he would do something during that day.

“I was at Harvard but not of it” what somewhat like a motto that Du Bois used. (11) Although he referred to Fisk as his true alma mater, he encouraged Fisk students to go to Harvard at least for a year. (11) He wanted them to leave a college that you loved more and go to Harvard for the educational reasons. He said, “…Harvard was of first importance in his intellectual life.”
