Wells uses the main narrator to express the story through a non-heroic person’s eyes if Martians attacked earth. Although the heroic narrator is the main narrator’s brother, he is the complete opposite. When the heroic narrator sees somebody in trouble, he puts himself in their situation and treats them the way he would want to be treated. “My brother immediately grasped the situation, shouted, and hurried towards the struggle” (pg.84). The heroic narrator fears nothing and will go through extremely dangerous situations to get others to safety. “What is this you are driving us into. For the main road is a boiling stream of people, a torrent of human beings rushing northward, one pressing on another” (pg.87). The heroic narrator feels better fighting the Martians, than running from them. When the heroic narrator comes face to face with death, he shows nothing but excitement. “The Martians staggered with the violence of her explosion, and in another moment the flaming wreckage, still driving forward with the impetus of its pace, had struck him and crumpled him up like a thing of cardboard. My brother shouted involuntarily” (pg.99). The heroic narrator represents a person who fears nothing and will do anything to keep other people safe.
