Another important contribution Freud made was his view on the unconscious mind. He thought it consisted of desires, wishes, needs, and impulses that a person wasn’t aware of in his/her normal state of mind. Freud compared our minds to an iceberg. The visible part of the iceberg is similar to our conscious level, the part that we are aware. The largest part of the iceberg, which is submerged under water, is similar to our unconscious level, the part of our mind where we are unaware. The unconscious level plays a major role in determining our behaviors.

Many people see Freud as a genius, a great man with many lasting ideas, while some see his ideas as outdated and wrong. However, other people see Freud as a fraud. Even though many of Freud’s ideas aren’t used today, his ideas have made a major impact on the development of psychology.

Freud used both hypnosis and free association as therapies for his patients. Hypnosis was used to get into a person’s unconscious level and to help him/her with any conflicts that him/her might have pushed into that level. Free association was used mostly when Freud was trying to analyze a person’s dream. He was very fascinated by dreams, seeing them as the key to unlock a person’s hidden life in his/her mind. He believed dreams were the “royal road to the unconscious” (Silverstein 74). By collecting and analyzing his own and his patients’ dreams, he gradually built his theory on dreams and published them in a book entitled The Interpretation of Dreams in 1900.

Freud continued to improve his theories and ideas until his death on September 23, 1929. he died from a cancer of the mouth and jaw. He suffered with this cancer for the last twenty years of his life. Not only did Freud contribute his views on the unconscious mind, he also made many other contributions.
