Kramer vs Doubtfire
Mrs. Doubtfire and Kramer vs. Kramer have lot of similarities and also quite a few differences between the two movies and the characters. Even though one is a comedy and one is a serious drama, the two movies are basically about two women that are very unhappy in their marriages and basically want out of a bad situation. When you really think and reflect on both movies, you get a sense of what the directors are trying to convey to the audiences, but yet they have taken different approaches to reach their audiences. In Kramer vs. Kramer, directed by Robert Benton, it is a movie that more adults will watch, because it is a serious drama, whereas, Mrs. Doubtfire directed by Chris Columbus, is a movie that a whole family can watch together because it appeals to all age groups and it’s a good comedy. Each movie is in effect stating how divorce and immaturity of parents can have an effect on our children in society. In Mrs. Doubtfire the mother, Miranda Hillard, was the more serious parent. She was very successful, had a family, and a lot of other things going for herself. Daniel Hillard was the father. Even though, Daniel was also successful, he was never serious, everything was a joke to him. Although a funny personality
Kramer vs. Kramer and in Ms. Doubtfire, both movies showed how ugly and unfair divorce can be for men. Custody of the children was not awarded because equality but because of gender. Custody was awarded to both mothers only because they were the mothers of the children and nothing else. Neither one of the courts took the time to acknowledge the close relationships that the children shared with their fathers, nor did it really consider that the children needed to have close relationships with their fathers. Kramer stated that “being the better parent has nothing to do with the sexual gender of the parent.” In both movies it seemed as though the main reasons why both mothers won full custody of the children were because they were mothers and family court generally favor women as being better equip to nurture children. In both movies, both mothers saw fit for their children to be with their fathers and each parent made it an issue to continue to have healthy relationships with both mother and father. In the end Ted Kramer ended up with full parental custody of his son Billy. Daniel Hillard was able to see and visit with his children anytime he wanted to without dressing up as a woman. The mothers and fathers of both movies worked out their differences, and got along with each other for the sake of their children, which, in the end, worked out for the better.
