Where The Wild Roses Grow ~ NickCave

“Where the Wild Roses Grow” by Nick Cave is a tragic tale of ill-fated love. Nick Cave uses a variety of literary elements such as foreshadowing, symbols and mood to strengthen and deepen the effect of his poem.

The tale of Elisa Day’s first and her last love takes place over a period of three days. From the moment he walked in her door she was captured by his charm and trustworthy personality: “When he knocked on my door and entered the room/ My trembling subsided in his sure embrace/ He would be my first man.” The man appears to be drawn to her at first sight: “From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one/ As she stared into my eyes and smiled.” On the second day their feelings toward each other become more apparent. “On the second day I brought her a flower/She was more beautiful than any woman I’d seen.” The man notices Elisa’s exceptional beauty and seems to desire it, but it is still unclear what his intentions are. Elisa on the other hand sees the man with adoring eyes and wants to be with him and to be comforted by his tender embrace: “I nodded my head as I lay on the bed.” On the third and final day after Elisa accepts her love’s offer to take away all of her pain he takes her to wher

The author uses a chorus that is repeated four times throughout the poem. The chorus seems to be a haunting song, sung by the female narrator, Elisa Day, after her death. This is suggested by the use of the word “was.” She was called Elisa Day but is now called the Wild Rose which perhaps alludes to where she was killed and where her body now lays. In between the choruses there are two stanzas: one told by the man, the other by Elisa Day and both in first person limited. The first four stanzas are written in a pattern of the male speaking first and then the female, however, the last two stanzas are opposite with the female speaking first and then the male. This might indicate that the mood has changed from love to a game. The man having the last words shows his dominance and that he has won his game.

The story of the Wild Rose and her first and only lover, “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” is a tragic and unfortunate tale of beauty and death. Throughout this heartrending poem Cave skillfully foreshadows Elisa’s horrible death and uses excellent words and phrases to set the perfect moods for his poem.

Mood is the feeling created in the reader by a literary work or passage often suggested by descriptive details. In the chorus Elisa seems lost and confused setting a desolate and gloomy mood. The first stanzas seem happy and loving. Cave uses word like “the one”, “smiled”, and “sure embrace” to emphasize the emotions felt between Elisa Day and the man. As the poem go
