You Move Me
Sometimes people go through life in what is seemingly a coma. These same people walk the earth in a bubble-like habitat, emotionally unattached and physically drained. If to ask one of these people what was wrong, more than likely no answer that made any sort of sense would be given. The characteristic that these individuals all may have in common however is a lack of love. The song, “You Move Me” by Garth Brooks, tells the story of one of these loveless individuals, before and after touched by love. Sometimes in life, people come across a person who will allow them to see a broader perspective of life. Love can bring a new perspective to the meaning of life. If one has nothing in their life keep them going, to give them drive and reason to life, the world can be a miserable place. In the beginning of the song, Brooks points out how life can be with the absence of love. This outlook on life can be attributed to the fact that there is nothing in this poor souls life that shows to them the joys of the world around. One of the more important things in life is after making a transformation, realizing the grave error of the previous ways. This is essential in order to never revert to previous modes of behavior. This occurs in the song, he looks back and sees the old him, and recognizes the viewpoint he used to hold. In the next four lines, Brooks explains what love was like before his transformation. A man named Hudson died, and his wife, Lucy became introverted and bitter. Her negative behavior went on for years. Eventually, she began to date again. After some bumpy roads she remarried, the woman who complained for years began using phrases like, “It’s just money”, and “Oh, don’t be such a party pooper.” The rebirth of love in her life had shown her what it was like to be happy again, to see the bright side. The line “I could look and not see” seems to summarize the message of this. How often in life do we do just that, or hear but not listen. To looks at something and to see it are two utterly different perspectives. Seeing achieves an understanding, whereas looking solely grasps the outward appearance. When people do what they do not understand or attempts to understand it becomes present that they are “going through the emotions” or in other words, just getting it over with and hurrying through without stopping to ‘smell the roses’. Upon realization of the new perspective, feeling the emotion is achieved. Understanding what is being felt occurs rat
