Before Goodman Brown leaves Faith tells him that he should stay and not leave her on during the night, but he answers her back telling her it will be all right “My love and Faith.”(614) This jumpstarts the story by symbolizing that Faith is just not his wife, but shows that she is his religious faith as well. Goodman Brown refers to Faith throughout the journey in many different ways.

They tell me that some of our community are to be here from Falmouth and beyond, and others…know almost as much deviltry as the best of us.” (518) The conversation was between the town minister and deacon Gookin. Brown also looks up to the deacon as a spiritual adviser. The deacon reveals his dark side in this conversation. Like good Closye, Gookin also turns evil. Brown definitely found out that evil lurks in deacon when he talks about what is going to go on at the meeting. “ There is a goodly young woman to be taken into communion.”(618) This act proves the deacon to have a black soul.
