Odysseus is unique among epic heroes; his strength comes mainly from his mind opposing other heroes whose strength comes from physical ability. Odysseus overcomes obstacles using cunning, guile and superiority of intellect.

Odysseus demonstrated his patience and good use of his reason, when he managed to outsmart Polyphemus and poke out his only eye. Homer describes Odysseus’ outstanding skills in the following lines:

“ The pike of olive, green though it had been,

reddened and glowed as if about to catch.

Deep in his crater eye”. (Book IX, line 400, p 315).

under my arm when the crux comes at last.”

To me, a hero is an ordinary person who acts brave under certain circumstances. For instance mayor Giuliani was a hero for me, because when the tragedy of the world trade center took place, he did act as leader. He showed his leadership through endurance, bravery, and confidence. He took initiative steps at the moment when the president wasn’t in the white house to take decisions. He stood by all New Yorkers’ side for support and comfort.

“Be quiet; keep it from the others, else

“ …only I thought he should be made to suffer all the way”(Book XIII, line 151, p 363). And added: “ Still I can give him a rough ride in, and will”(Book V, line 300, p274).
