World War I

World War I otherwise known as the "Great War," was a devastating war that effected many places and very many lives. Because of the effects of the war, many people are determined to search for the country that was to blame for all the disaster created. At no time in the history of mankind had the inferno of war engulfed the entire globe, but World War I left and indelible mark in history as it shook the elitist monarchist governments of Europe to the core. Many theories have been argued to whom is primarily responsible for the commencement of World War I, but in drafting the Versailles treaty, the triumphant Allies bluntly asserted Germany responsible for this massive war. The outbreak was contingent on a determining number of factors. These factors include: nationalism that was spread throughout Europe before World War I, the arms race, and the alliance system.

Although Germany was not all to blame for the outbreak of World War I, it did contribute more than a fare share in its involvement in the war between countries and colonies. "No nation had been entirely innocent, none criminally guilty... " (Doc. #7) This is just saying that, yeah maybe Germany had a large part in the war, but all the countries surr

This strong nationalism, in turn led to the arms race. Germany and Britain were fighting to obtain the world’s best navy fashioning extensive numbers of ships, weapons, and naval personnel. "By all odds the most alarming German action and the one most calculated to make a working agreement with the British impossible was the decision to build a fleet... " (Doc. #10) not only was Germany and Britain involved in the arms race, every country was, but also only one showed more eagerness to fight the war – Germany. Statistics show that Germany made immense changes to weapons, artillery, soldiers, and other military particulars. Not only did they make changes to military aspects; extensive economic changes were also accomplished. Why was Britain so reluctant to apply to Germany, for the purpose of managing it in Europe, the same formula that had brought about an improvement in Anglo-French and Anglo-Russian relations? This deteriorating situation leads readers to believe that the parties involved were not concerned with the ramifications of global war. Instead of growing, the great powers expanded their navies and armies. The result was an arms race that made war more likely. England felt threatened from Germanys build up of its navy because something that Kaiser William II said: "All the long years of my reign, my Colleagues, the monarchs of Europe, Paid no attention to what I have to Say. Soon, with my great navy To endorse my words, they will be More respectful." Because of that, England increased their naval spending. Germany’s eagerness for war may be a contributing factor to why they were the cause of the outbreak in World War I. An example that shows exactly that, is during the Moroccan Crisis Germany showed unrestricted support for Austria-Hungary, which undoubtedly proved that Germany was willing to advance in to war at any point in time. Germany did not once consider that they would ever lose a war. They did not care, for they had nationalism that they felt would make them immortal against anyone or anything. They would not only fight for themselves they would be in picking at other county’s business and supporting a country just in order to cause a war – or so it seemed.
