Wisdom & Age

What is wisdom? Wisdom is traditionally associated with profound understanding and deep insight. Such understanding and insight is usually integrated with a wide variety of various life experiences. Wisdom is believed to be the relationship that exists between things (Teachings of Buddha). The term thing describes the relationship between objects and human beings. These relationships that exist between things have two common factors, the correlation and examination of prior experiences or relational values of that unique individual. The second is the concreteness that maintains a sense of wholeness among all things, this is related to an individuals perceptual views of the world around them. With that being said, wisdom does not require formal education or even an actual partaking in some life experiences. But it does require the cognitive ability to simplify multiple elements of larger more complex compilations. In an essence wisdom is the profound understanding of simplistic components that requires relational examination between past experiences. Wisdom is extremely diverse and is completely derived from situational experiences based on prior experiences The Wisdom page).

There are a few aspects I would like to cover


The older adults also reflected better in multiple areas of wisdom pertaining to life. One area that showed age to be beneficial was the difficult dilemmas in life that people are faced with as well as coming up with good advice more consistently than the younger adults. The older adults also generated more options to solve a problem. They offered better strategic advice, as well as knowledge about the contexts of life and change. It is believed that the older adults did better because age develops organizing principles that enable older people to solve problems more efficiently. ( Dilenschneider, 2001). There seems to be a theme that age can have an effect on wisdom but is not necessarily the case. Our own experience has shown us that some people never learn regardless of time.

Age, related to wisdom is ultimately the acquisition of life experiences. As the result age can provide the individual with sound wholeness of experience, when experience is retained as useful or applicable wisdom is considered to be acquired (Ardelt, 2000) It is quite reasonable to say age, or the passing of time, and experience can usually be considered a beneficial factor in the acquisition process of wisdom.

The transition beginning the decline of intellectual knowledge and the maturing stage of wisdom-related knowledge is often unique to the individual and begins when acceptance of aging has been realized. This realization may occur in multiple ways but results in a more collective peaceful view of oneself and life (Crosby, 1998)

The objective of wisdom-related knowledge is to master ones inner world through the liberation from inner forces. These forces can be defined as one’s fears, impulses, passions, and desires, and ultimately accept reality as it is. In order for one to reach this plateau of thought they must bridge the gap between the subject and the object allowing the mind to become liberated from its own delusion. Only when the mind is liberated will it age well.

The fifth domain is labeled, effects on the knower. This domain has to do with the perception of knowledge capacity. Intellectual knowledge or scientific knowledge is considered potentially limitless pertaining to the abundance one person can consume. But with wisdom overwhelming abundance hinders the mind and results in unclear thought. The acceptance of the limits will lead to a mind that is free of doubt and question.

Learning, just like other mental characteristics of the human mind change as the individual ages, in this case intellect and general knowledge of factual material gradually decline. In the early to middle year
