No connection can be created to the prisoners because the reader is unable to know their thoughts about dying. The reader can not feel the prisoner’s fear or sense of surprise when they discover they are about to die. “I opened my eyes at the bang, I saw Hawkins staggering at the knees and lie out flat at Noble’s feet…..” (709) What was running through Hawkins head before the bullet came crashing into his chest?
