After the end of the Reconstruction of the South, the people of the United States of America were looking for a change. Between the years of 1865 and 1900 big businesses and monopolies had become overwhelmingly powerful. Especially in the field of railroads, the Robber Barons were almost unstoppable in their quest for more money. That was when it became necessary for the government to step in. The government passed the Interstate Commerce Act and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, as an attempt to control the powerful conglomerates. Of course those actions went against laissez faire and the government became actively involved in commerce. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was sponsored by John Sherman. It was a response to the “trusts” formed between corporations. These “trusts” enabled businesses to be unstoppable because they were able to eliminate all other competition. President Grover Cleveland said that something was required to break these monopolies up. He was right and the government definitely needed to step in. The bill passed through the Senate with an interesting vote. Even though the Senate consisted mainly of people that should not want this bill passed, it was passed almost unanimously. This brings up the question of whether or not the bill was ever planned to be enforced. In a decision by the Supreme Court, it was decided that the bill was to be used only to break up strikes.
