A Focus On Mothers

Sweet Mystery, by Judith Paterson, Distant Son, by Norman McMillan, and My Mother’s Witness, a biography by Carolyn Haines, are all books that focus a great deal on a mother figure. That is to say that in each book the mother played a central role in the author’s life or, in the case of My Mother’s Witness, the mother played a central role in Peggy’s life, whom the book is written about. The mothers in these books; Emily, in Sweet Mystery, Lucille, in Distant Son, and Inez, in My Mother’s Witness, made such an impact on their children’s lives that the children have actually written, or have had someone else write, their own life stories, which heavily includes their mother’s role in each of their lives. Looking closely at each mother figure, there are several aspects that are very similar in each of their lives that the women handled in sometimes very different ways. Rearing children in a male dominated society, dealing with poverty, attitude toward the children, and attitude toward the children’s education are some of the aspects that lend themselves to comparison between the three mothers.

Emily Paterson, Lucille McMillan, and Inez Albritton all reared their children in the Deep South

Inez Albritton was different from the other two mothers. She lived a life in which she dared not speak out against her husband. Not only was she oppressed by her husband, but also by the other men in which she came in contact. For Inez, even the knowledge of numerous illegal activities was not enough to persuade her to rebel against men. Inez endured in a relationship in which, in order to survive, she had to do as she was told. That is not to say that Inez never rebelled against her husband, but rebellion was more the exception than the rule.

Inez Albritton, Peggy Morgan’s mother, was, like Lucille, very poor. Inez worked in the cotton fields, carrying her children with her while she worked, in order to earn money for her family. Her husband, Gene, often made money, albeit illegal, but did not appear to share it with Inez and the children. Like Lucille, Inez seems to have accepted her financial situation. The major difference between Lucille and Inez is that Inez worked in order to be able to provide for her family.

The most fascinating detail concerning Emily, Lucille, and Inez is how they each viewed their children’s educations. Although Emily did not live long enough to see all her children enter their school years, she did play a huge role in Judith Paterson’s early school years. Emily was so wrapped up in her drugs, alcohol and mental instability that Judith’s schooling was of little to no importance. As a result, her schooling was so irregular that even as a child Judith was aware of the abnormality of it. The times when Emily was well she was a good mother, so it seems that without the use of drugs and alcohol Emily’s attitude toward Judith’s schooling would have been much different.

Lucille was very different from Emily. Lucille knew her children were well-bred and impressed that fact upon them. Because of that, she expected them to attend school and do extremely well. Although Distant Son never really says Lucille’s exact view on schooling, it seems as though she highly values it and conveys that to her children.

Inez, with all the abuse she had to contend with, still managed to show her children that she loved them. It appears that Inez did do things with her children when she could, but her love for her
