For my book report this quarter, I chose the movie A League of Their Own. This movie has a lot of characters but the one that stands out the most to me is Dottie Hinson. She was a kind-hearted person that always cared about other people. Dottie always made the right choices and was a good leader for her team.
Dottie Hinson was the starting catcher for the Rockford Peaches. She was an amazing ball player. Not only was she a catcher but she could really nail the ball. Ernie Gabindino was given the credit for discovering her talents during a small hometown women’s baseball game. Dottie refused the invitation to try out even after she was offered $75.00 a week. At that time Dottie who was working in a dairy farm was only making $35.00 per week. The recruiter then spoke with Kit, Dottie’s younger sister, who he really did not want. In 1943 America fought in WWII against Hitler. All the Major League baseball players went to war. Walter Harvey one of the leagues owners gathered some of the other owners together to figure out a way to keep baseball alive. Mr. Lowenstein came up with the idea to start women’s baseball and so the A.A.G.P.B.L. (All American Girls Professional Baseball League) was originated. Over 100 women tried out for the teams at Harvey field. Only sixty-four women made the cut. The women were from all different backgrounds and parts of the country. Some worked as dancers, others in dairy farms and some women could not even read or write. All of them could play baseball.
