Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has more than doubled since 1990 leading to a boom in the disorder or a high rate of misdiagnosed patients. Much controversy has surfaced about the way this disorder is diagnosed and the medication used to control it. Even though Ritalin has shown success in treating the disorder, other approaches like parent training and behavior modification should be tried to reduce the use of Ritalin or to cut the use of the drug completely. Evidence does show that behavior programs are effective when combined with Ritalin. Since the exact cause of this disorder is not known, this research intends to examine different treatment approaches. What will be done in this study is an observation of the participants’ behavior according to their stimulus to find which shows the most improvement in controlling the symptoms of ADHD. It is hypothesized that the results will show that behavior modification, along with a dosage of medication every other day, will be the most effective form of treatment to solving ADHD. For a period of 6 months I plan to observe each of the groups based on the questions in the survey. My observations will take place at the clinic from which I obtained them. After a 3 months observation period I plan to take the survey and give my opinion of each of the participants in each group and add them to each of their files. At the end of the 6-month experiment, I will give the parents and teachers the same survey they took before the experiment was conducted except in a different order and each question will be worded differently and still having the same meaning. About half of the children with ADHD also have a learning or communication problems, perform badly in school and have difficulty interacting with others (Mariani & Barkley, 1997; Green, 1996). A successful diagnosis of ADHD depends on many crucial factors. The APA has established criteria for diagnosing ADHD by overall behavior evaluations by his or her doctors. The reasons test should be done are to be sure patients are not wrongly diagnosed because of ADHD’s similar symptoms to other disorders. Another reason is because of the non- physical factors that can cause these types of symptoms to be present such as abuse and drug dependent parents. In order to rule this out you have to get a psychiatrist’s opinion so that a diagnosis is not made inaccurately. The treatment for ADHD can be in different forms such as therapy, behavior modification, and medications. Medication is the treatment used most. There are many types of medication on the market including dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), pemoline (Cylert), a combination of dextroamphetamine and amphentamine (Adderall), and the most popular of them all being Methylphenidate, which is known to the world as Ritalin.
